The Artifact Institute is pleased to open its facility to the public on Thursday 24 July from 7 to 10 PM. The facility is operating this summer to complete the project Investigation 1: Electronic equipment discarded between 2004 and 2009 by arts and cultural organizations in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

About Investigation 1

Investigation 1 is a process-based project involving the systematic study of over one thousand pieces of electronic equipment discarded between 2004 and 2009 by various organizations in the Halifax area. 

The objectives of Investigation 1 are to:
-create a public context for discussing the changing valuations ascribed to media technology;
-document the effects of changing patterns of media technology use and disposal on the production, presentation, and pedagogy of art and culture in the HRM;
-determine what to do with each investigated artifact;
-carry out the course of action determined for each artifact;
-distribute artifacts evaluated for distribution to the public and to non-profit arts organizations free of charge;
-discard artifacts evaluated for discarding in accordance with Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship guidelines;
-and publish information about the investigated artifacts and the investigation process in both official languages.

About the Artifact Institute

The Artifact Institute was founded in 2007 by Tim Dallett and Adam Kelly to study and intervene in the processes by which artifacts undergo changes in use, value, and meaning. The Artifact Institute uses artistic, institutional, and activist methods and practices to address the relationship of human-made objects and organizational structures to their aesthetic, technical, and social contexts. The Artifact Institute conducts research, collects artifacts, provides services, gives workshops, presents exhibitions, and produces publications. These activities are positioned in a hybrid space between contemporary art, technological practice, and critical inquiry to create multiple points of access and engagement.
