Sculpture Lecture Series: Krzysztof Wodiczko

The Sculpture Area of NSCAD University and the Contemporary Art Projects Society are pleased to present a public talk by internationally recognized artist Krzysztof Wodiczko. The talk will take place on Monday 31 March at 7:30 pm in room HA19 at Dalhousie’s School of Architecture, located at 5410 Spring Garden Road. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Krzysztof Wodiczko is Professor in Residence of Art, Design, and the Public Domain at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is renowned for his large-scale slide and video projections on architectural facades and monuments which he has realized in more than eighty countries including Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Poland, Israel and the United States. Since the late 1980s, his projections have involved the active participation of marginalized and estranged city residents. Simultaneously, he has been designing and implementing a series of nomadic instruments and vehicles with homeless, immigrant, and war veteran operators for their survival and communication. He taught frequently at NSCAD from the late 1970s to the 90s and has stated that his time in Halifax, where he created some of his earliest projection works, was formative.

Since 1985, he has had major retrospectives at such institutions as the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum Sztuki, Lodz; Fundacio Tapies, Barcelona; La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Contemporary Art Center, Warsaw; de Apel, Amsterdam, and the Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw. His work has also been exhibited in the Paris, Sydney, Lyon, Venice and Whitney Biennials, and in many other major international art festivals and exhibitions.

Wodiczko was awarded the Hiroshima Prize in 1998 for his contribution as an artist to world peace. He is also the recipient of the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, the Georgy Kepes Award, the Katarzyna Kobro Prize, and the "Gloria Artis" Golden Medal from the Polish Ministry of Culture. In 2009 he developed the War Veteran Projection Vehicle in Liverpool, the Veterans' Flame project at Governors Island in New York, and presented OUT OF HERE: The Veterans Project at the ICA in Boston. He is currently developing new public art projects in Poland and France.

The work of Wodiczko has been the subject of numerous publications, including Critical Vehicles: Writings, Projects, Interviews (1999), Krzysztof Wodiczko: Guests (2009), and City of Refuge: A 9/11 Memorial (2010).

This is the second of three public presentations by internationally known speakers that focus on the topic of site in contemporary art. Artist Martha Rosler will give a talk in the Fall of 2014 (date and location TBA). This series has received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.
