Mark Gilbert Artist Talk

Dalhousie Art Gallery is pleased to present an artist's talk by Mark Gilbert, in conjunction with the screening of Midge Mackenzie's documentary, Saving Faces, which appears in this year's Student, Staff, Faculty, and Alumni Exhibition.

Saving Faces (2000), a film by the British director Midge Mackenzie (1938-2004) documents the vision of Prof. Iain Hutchison, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Bart’s and the London Hospitals. Iain Hutchison fulfilled an ambition, nurtured for many years, when he created the Saving Faces project by inviting Mark Gilbert to work as an artist in residence and paint his patients.
 
Mark Gilbert is currently carrying out a Post Doctoral Fellowship with Dalhousie’s Division of Medical Education HEALS program (Health and Education through the Arts and Life Skills). With Saving Faces he has captured the intense physical and emotional journey of facial surgery patients. His paintings record the patients' appearance before, during and after the facial surgery that has corrected their facial deformities, or repaired the damage caused by car crashes and fights or the removal of cancerous tumours.
