Panel Discussion: Realism: Future Directions

In conjunction with Capture 2014: Nova Scotian Realism

The 28 artists selected for the exhibition Capture 2014: Nova Scotian Realism employ a wide range of production strategies in the “capturing” of representational images in paint mediums, watercolour and pastel that can be categorized as realistic. Multiple image sources, framing devices, figure/ground relationships and levels of painterly craft are evident in this exhibition. 

This symposium opens up for discussion the fundamental question about the multiple trajectories of ‘realism’ and how the diverse approaches of these artists relate to this category. Some practices certainly quote the legacy of Colville, Forrestall and the Pratts and continue in that vein of thought. Others begin with camera-based images and those obtained through the portal of digital culture. Yet other artists, particularly those working in the still life genre, are quoting subject matters from past centuries that are updates from a contemporary point of view.

The symposium will begin with a curator's introduction with Tom Smart and Peter Dykhuis followed by an illustrated historical overview by Tom Smart. This will be followed by six short presentations by participating artists Anthony Clementi, Richard Davis, Paul Hannon, Gord MacDonald, Mary Reardon and Anna Syperek, followed by a Q&A period.

After a health break, a panel including Matthew Reichertz (Artist and Educator at NSCAD University) and Deborah Carver (Director of Studio 21) will address the historical antecedents of Realism, consider the discrepancies between presenting work in a commercial context versus public galleries as well as the issues surrounding the future of Realism as a strategy for art-making in this region. The panel will be followed by a general discussion including audience and community members.

The event will be closed with a social reception including light refreshments. Attendance is free and all are welcome.
