Exhibition
From the Permanent Collection
(1) Contemporary Drawings
This collection of contemporary work selected from the Permanent Collection highlights works purchased from the Dalhousie Drawing Exhibitions which the Gallery organized between 1975 and 1990. Challenging traditional notions of drawing, these biennial artist-curated exhibitions presented a wide range of approaches and premises, exploring the edges and definitions of drawing. In this exhibition, on display in the Main Gallery, specific purchases from the Drawing Exhibitions, such as works by Graham Metson, Michael Snow, Joyce Weiland, Charlotte Wilson Hammond, Tim Whiten, Susan Wood and Don Wright, have been augmented by other relevant works in the collection.
(2) Carol Fraser 1930-1991
This tribute to the work of the late Carol Fraser, who, among her many roles, was once director of the Dalhousie Art Gallery, comprises twelve works from the Permanent Collection. Six of these works, including the important painting Salvage 1974, were recently acquired through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Fraser's work will be on display in the Side Gallery.
(3) The Richard L. Raymond Graphic Art Collection
Beginning in 1988, the late Richard L. Raymond generously donated funds for the purchase of Canadian Graphic Art created between 1920 and 1950. To date the collection comprises 13 works, including prints by Carl Schaefer, W.J. Phillips, Fritz Brandtner and D.C Mackay, all of which will be on display in the Alcove Gallery. We are grateful that Mrs. Jocelyn Raymond has agreed to continue funding this collection.
