Bedrock: Six Contemporary Artists from Iceland

This engaging exhibition presented paintings, drawings, prints, digitized images, mixed media works and a video installation, by six prominent Icelandic artists who currently live and work in Reykjavik: Birgir Andrésson, Svava Bjørnsdottir, Hulda Hakon, Anna Lindal, Jon Oskar, and Ragna Robertsdottir.  The works ranged in content from those that specifically draw upon unique aspects of Icelandic culture (such as its extraordinary volcanic landscape and rich literary tradition) to those that are situated within the more formalist traditions and global discourses of modern and postmodern art making.  These themes are explored in curator Susan Gibson Garvey's essay in the illustrated exhibition catalogue. Bedrock: Six Contemporary Artists from Iceland was presented in conjunction with HX - the Halifax Exhibition of International Contemporary Art, involving a city-wide network of galleries, museums and other exhibition sites which presented works by national and international artists, as well as lectures, films and symposia on contemporary art throughout the summer of 2000.
