Work, Workers, Work: Rearranging the Land
This exhibition presents the works of six contemporary Canadian photographers - Robert Bean, Edward Burtynsky, Blake Fitzpatrick, Geoffrey James, Mark Ruwedel and James Williams - who document and interpret certain kinds of intervention in the landscape of North America. Specific forces (social, industrial, ideological, aesthetic) are implicated as agents of rearrangement. The broad concept of"work", from visionary vocation to economic necessity, is seen as the driving force behind many such interventions in the land, and provides the link between these artists' diverse images: earthworks, railroad cuttings, steelworks and workers, carefully designed city parks, the visible detritus of working mines, the invisible effects of nuclear power generation, all set against the relative timelessness of geological processes.
