Christopher Strong

30 January, 2018, 7:00pm

The only female studio director of Hollywood’s ‘Golden Years’, Arzner specialized in examining female archetypes. In Christopher Strong, Katharine Hepburn plays an aviatrix caught between achievements in the air and love on the ground.

Part of the series:

Women Filmmakers 1931-1969

CURATED BY RON FOLEY MACDONALD

In the first installment of this year-long series focussing on women filmmakers, we survey films by female directors, from the early ‘talkies’ to the wilder challenges of the late 1960s. Female directors have always been the exception to the rule in this male-dominated industry. However, from Leni Riefenstahl’s first self-directed film The Blue Light to the studio exploits of Dorothy Arzner to the visual and narrative inquiries of Shirley Clarke and Agnès Varda, this series will offer proof of continuity of women at the helm of ground breaking cinematic projects through the middle of the 20th Century.

Screenings Tuesdays at 7 PM in the MacAloney Room, 4th floor, Dalhousie Arts Centre. Free admission.
